Fact: No two physical objects can occupy the same space at the same time.
This is just basic physics. We have to choose between this piece of furniture and that piece to fill a given space in the corner of the living room. We have to choose between a handful of blueberries or a handful of nuts to go into this bowl. We have to choose between this dress or that suit to clothe our bodies.
We have to choose because we can't have both occupying the same space. And we get this. We learn it as little kids. We live by it even if we fight it once in a while (overpacking a suitcase just a wee bit, anyone?).
In fact, we can even thank this law of physics because it has compelled so many of us to choose a path to a simpler life, to live with less so we can create more space and more openness to breathe and to live a minimalist lifestyle.
We have chosen to give away the physical clutter that piles up in our spaces in exchange for serenity, for simplicity, and for a richer life.
But what about non-physical clutter that fills up our minds and fogs our vision every day, every second even?
Why can't we apply the same principle to our thoughts, which could benefit a thousand fold from a little clean-up in their dusty attic?
What would we do if we knew for a certain fact that a positive thought and a negative thought cannot occupy the same space in our mind at the same time? That they cannot co-exist at all?
We would have to start choosing our thoughts like we choose our clothes for the day.
For the longest time, I could not get on board with the positive thinking movement. It sounded fluffy and shallow at first. It seemed to make light of my problems and most of all, it didn't seem to work.
I would read books, scan hundreds of blog posts, even write a few of my own, and repeat the positive affirmations over and over to myself, all to little or no avail. Deep inside, I still felt largely negative, unhappy and far from positive or peaceful.
Worst of all, I felt like a fake. I wanted to be positive. I talked about positivity, and I wanted to believe in it but it just wasn't working its magic on me.
And it wasn't for lack of trying. I really did try. My husband can tell you about my sincere attempts, and my Kindle can prove how many books I devoured to prove my interest!
But positive thinking still didn't work for me. Here's why.
You see, I was committing to the positive thoughts as much as I was holding on to the negative ones. I was thinking "I am powerful beyond measure. I can run a successful business." as much as I was thinking, "This is not going to work. I am going to mess it up. It is too late for me to start over." I repeated and reinforced the good as much as the bad.
And since both thoughts could not occupy the same space in my mind, the power of habit sided with the one that it was used to nurturing: the negative thought. It was the familiar voice it knew, and it takes a lot less effort to believe the familiar than to get on board with the new and unfamiliar.
So how do we apply this principle to clean out the mind clutter for good?
If you are reading this, you are either a pro minimalist or a new and aspiring one (welcome). So given our love of "less is more" in the physical world, let's follow the step-by-step approach below to clean out the clutter in the mind:
1. Get ready to move out of your castle. Imagine your mind lives in a giant castle filled with the stuff that fills up minds: thoughts, worries, anxieties, fears, memories, desires, questions, yearnings, … and more thoughts.
Now imagine you are going to move out of this giant castle. It has been good to you no doubt but the rent is up and you can't afford it anymore, and you are moving into a clean, open, well-lit but teeny tiny space in your favorite spot in the world. 2. Choose carefully what you pack. You have to pack very light. And you can only take with you what you plan to use. Ask yourself (really, loud and clear, ask yourself):
Am I going to use the worries, the anxieties, the fears and the negative thoughts? Am I going to use the memories, the desires and the positive thoughts?
Decide on each one as if this were a real move (because it is). Decide consciously and with intention. What will you choose to take, and what will you choose to leave behind?
3. Find a space for everything you brought as you move into your new place. Everything has to occupy a space and no two things can occupy the same space at the same time so it would be best if you brought not quite so much. There's room only for half the stuff in your head anyway!
4. Apply the rule to live clutter-free now. If you chose to leave behind the worries, anxieties, fears, and negative thoughts, then you have de-cluttered your mind from the get-go. You are truly a hero, at minimalism and at positive thinking (and the rest of us envy you!)
But not all of us can detach so quickly from our cozy familiar world even if it means our negative thoughts.
So if you chose to bring everything—the good, the bad and the ugly—your tiny space will be beyond cluttered. That's okay. Just consciously apply the rule: No two things can occupy the same space in your mind at the same time. Choose either a negative thought or a positive one for this day or this hour or this very minute. Discard the other.
For instance, you can either choose a peaceful memory or a big worry, fear or courage, acceptance or denial.
And listen, you can choose the worry if you want. Just choose it consciously. No fooling yourself. And then, worry. Worry until you are sick of it. Worry a lot. Then choose fear if you must and fear as much as you can. Then choose anxiety and be anxious for a few hours.
I am not saying you can't choose the bad. I'm just saying you can't choose both and this is where we finally start to outsmart that clever mind of ours.
And it's where you begin to think simpler now: You can have one thought at any given moment, but not two or ten.
Sometimes you choose right, sometimes you learn, but if you keep applying the rule, every day you will get closer to the freedom and peace that only a clutter-free mind can give you.
But what if you can't choose? What about the times you feel indecisive or don't care?
Every time you give up the choice, you return to what you know, you go back to default, to the familiar face, the good old smell and taste. Your familiar and your default mode is different from mine but as far as our desires, I'll go out on a limb and say we both want the same thing, you and I.
We want to be happy, free of worry and anxiety, free of stress and fear, and definitely free of clutter. We want to fill our minds with positive thoughts and our hearts with peace and joy and love. No?
So as you settle into your new tiny clean clutter-free space in your favorite spot in the world, make room only for positivity, for joy, for serenity, for optimism and for happiness. It's a process, my dear, it's an adjustment, it takes time but It Works.
Choose to fill your new abode in this manner one thought at a time and you will be surprised how the small stuff adds up to take you where you were always belonged: with a quiet clutter-free peaceful mind.

I don't have a schedule. I don't have plans. I have intentions. Peace #1 priority. Am I in peace now? Am I in peace now? Peace is health. Health is wealth. Nothing can be accomplished outside of peace.
If I have to lay here all day in the woods under my sleeping bag, I will for peace. Food won't make me happy for long. People won't. Things won't. Only my perspective I have the power to do anything about. I have a choice. I am setting a standard for myself that others can live with. Convenient easy free honest. I'm fairly happy w what I have. If I really need something else it will come like it always has.
Let's not pay to live on our planet. Let be happy w the free things and value peace above all. Peace is not submission, it's surrender into who we are. It's full power serving all now. Its what we came here to do and will never be truly happy till we are it. Yet all it is mainly is non participation in what don't fully resonate with.
So I just lay here n breathe n smile n let go n watch "my" fingers move on this screen. Are they even mine? Do I care? Not really. Am I feeling peace n love for all? Getting there yes. Stilling the waters. Calm. Allowing the allowance. Non ownership. Un-controlling the uncontrollable. Just being, complete now "as-is". Planet Awesum! Gratitude is abundance.

Consider this Helpful Guide to Becoming Unbusy:
1. Realize that being busy is a choice. It is a decision we make. We are never forced into a lifestyle of busyness. The first, and most important, step to becoming less busy is to simply realize that our schedules are determined by us. We do have a choice in the matter. We don't have to live busy lives.
2. Stop the glorification of busy. Busy, in and of itself, is not a badge of honor. In fact, directed at the wrong pursuits, it is actually a limiting factor to our full potential. It is okay to not be busy. Repeat this with me: It is okay to not be busy.
3. Appreciate and schedule rest. One of the reasons many of us keep busy schedules is we fail to recognizethe value of rest. But rest is beneficial to our bodies, our minds, and our souls. Set aside one day per week for rest and family. Intentionally schedule it on your calendar. Then, guard it at all costs.
4. Revisit your priorities. Become more intentional with your priorities and pursuits in life. Determine again what are the most significant contributions you can offer this world. And schedule your time around those first. Busyness is, at its core, about misplaced priorities.
5. Own fewer possessions. The things we own take up far more time and mental energy than we realize. They need to be cleaned, organized, and maintained. And the more we own, the more time is required. Own less stuff. And find more time because of it.
6. Cultivate space in your daily routine. Take time for lunch. Find space in your morning to sit quietly before starting your day. Invest in solitude, meditation, or yoga. Find opportunity for breaks at work in between projects. Begin right away cultivating little moments of space and margin in your otherwise busy day.
7. Find freedom in the word, "no." Seneca wrote, "Everybody agrees that no one pursuit can be successfully followed by a man who is preoccupied with many things." Recognize the inherent value in the word "no." Learning to say "no" to less important commitments opens your life to pursue the most important.
Busy does not need to define you. Unbusy is possible. It's okay to be happy with a calm life. And doesn't that sound wonderful right about now?

Many of you are experiencing emotional turmoil as your unaddressed issues keep bursting into your awareness in ways that seriously unsettle you but which do not seem to have any identifiable cause. All you need to do is acknowledge them. There is absolutely no need at all to identify a cause or a lesson that they might be presenting to you which requires you to offer restitution or self-abasement. By simply accepting them and letting them be – letting them, as it were, rest in your conscious awareness – you release your attachment to them so that they can pass through, as they will, rather like the weather.
It is a case of allowing yourselves to forgive yourselves for any and all errors and mistakes, including any belief that some of your deeply buried and unrecognized thoughts, words, or actions may have seriously harmed others. Your discomfort arises from unacknowledged issues that you have denied because you fear that you have done things and taken part in activities that are unforgivable. But all that is part of the illusion and in truth never happened – because it is illusory, unreal. You are all beings of Love, and although you have at times apparently “misbehaved,” it is now time for you to release any guilt, shame, or emotional suffering by allowing it to pass through your minds without engaging with it. Love is reasserting Itself as your true Essence and dissolving every remaining unreal and unloving aspect of yourselves that you have clung to, along with the illusion itself.
There is no sin. All consciousness is one with God, Who is infinite Love in infinite abundance, and therefore every conscious entity is and always has been pure Love – and nothing else. That is difficult for you to grasp as you observe the conflicts on Earth, both present and from your long history, and the immense amounts of suffering that they have caused. In the illusion there is and has been much suffering that humanity has experienced as very, very real, but you are all on your paths out of the illusion and home to Reality where your true presence has always been, and where you remain, eternally present. Love is your nature, and at the depths of your essence, as you experience it in the illusion, you have no desire and never have had the desire or intent to hurt or offend anyone, even though you have engaged in a game of doing so. Love – you, as you truly are – could never intend anything that is in the slightest way unloving because there is nothing that is unloving.
Within the illusion that incontrovertible truth seems impossible to believe or accept, and that is why you find it so difficult to forgive, unless and until you have seen the guilty one – yourself or another – discovered, judged, blamed, shamed, and punished. This is the biggest stumbling-block on your path to awakening: non-forgiveness. The absolute essentiality of forgiving, if personal peace and self-acceptance is to be achieved, is now recognized by mainstream psychology. It is a very recent recognition. Previously, and for eons, all that is unforgiving was believed to be normal because even the gods you had invented would not forgive. In the last one hundred years enormous progress has been made by humanity on its spiritual path of evolution, as shown just by your recognition of this one momentous but long-denied truth.
Nevertheless, there are still many on Earth who, because of the pain and suffering they have undergone in their present lives or in past ones, are unable and unwilling to accept that forgiveness is a loving balm that heals all wounds. Those of you reading or listening to this know this is the truth, but some of you also have difficulty with it because of your own personal and very intense suffering, or, more likely, due to your awareness of and involvement in the apparently utterly unjustifiable suffering that others are undergoing.
So when you go within to that quiet and inviolate inner space to which each of you has access, ask those in the spiritual realms on whom you call for help to assist you in understanding and then accepting that forgiveness is the balm that heals all wounds. Then practice forgiving. Not conditional forgiving: “Only if that person acknowledges their error, apologizes, or promises never again to make it, will I forgive them!” But unconditional forgiving. . . forgiving without any conditions at all. By doing so you release the charge you have on the one you are forgiving, and the words or actions which caused you pain no longer fester in your mind, demanding restitution or an apology which may never be forthcoming. By holding on to offenses committed against you, you deny yourselves healing and cause yourselves further pain. By forgiving, you free yourselves; your stress levels fall, and you start to live in the now moment where you can enjoy smelling the roses.
Keep reminding yourselves: “Forgiveness is the loving balm that heals all wounds.” Deep within, you know this is the truth, so practice it until it becomes automatic, and enjoy the peace, the calm, and the freedom it brings you. And when you have forgiven, a most amazing thing will happen. Because, Love having filled your heart, you will realize that in truth there was never anything to forgive. . . because there is only Love. . . which can never be hurt, offended, or angered. It can only Love!

Our culture leads people to believe that hair style is a matter of personal preference, that hair style is a matter of fashion and/or convenience, and that how people wear their hair is simply a cosmetic issue. Back in the Viet Nam war however, an entirely different picture emerged, one that has been carefully covered up and hidden from public view.
In the early nineties, Sally [name changed to protect privacy] was married to a licensed psychologist who worked at a VA Medical hospital. He worked with combat veterans with PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder. Most of them had served in Viet Nam.
Sally said: "I remember clearly an evening when my husband came back to our apartment on Doctor's Circle carrying a thick official looking folder in his hands. Inside were hundreds of pages of certain studies commissioned by the government. He was in shock from the contents. What he read in those documents completely changed his life. From that moment on my conservative middle of the road husband grew his hair and beard and never cut them again. What is more, the VA Medical center let him do it, and other very conservative men in the staff followed his example. As I read the documents, I learned why. It seems that during the Viet Nam War special forces in the war department had sent undercover experts to comb American Indian Reservations looking for talented scouts, for tough young men trained to move stealthily through rough terrain. They were especially looking for men with outstanding, almost supernatural, tracking abilities. Before being approached, these carefully selected men were extensively documented as experts in tracking and survival.
With the usual enticements, the well proven smooth phrases used to enroll new recruits, some of these Indian trackers were then enlisted. Once enlisted, an amazing thing happened. Whatever talents and skills they had possessed on the reservation seemed to mysteriously disappear, as recruit after recruit failed to perform as expected in the field.
Serious causalities and failures of performance led the government to contract expensive testing of these recruits, and this is what was found.
When questioned about their failure to perform as expected, the older recruits replied consistently that when they received their required military haircuts, they could no longer 'sense' the enemy, they could no longer access a 'sixth sense' , their 'intuition' no longer was reliable, they couldn't 'read' subtle signs as well or access subtle extrasensory information.
So the testing institute recruited more Indian trackers, let them keep their long hair, and tested them in multiple areas. Then they would pair two men together who had received the same scores on all the tests. They would let one man in the pair keep his hair long, and gave the other man a military haircut. Then the two men retook the tests.
Time after time the man with long hair kept making high scores. Time after time, the man with the short hair failed the tests in which he had previously scored high scores.
Here is a typical test:
The recruit is sleeping out in the woods. An armed 'enemy' approaches the sleeping man. The long haired man is awakened out of his sleep by a strong sense of danger and gets away long before the enemy is close, long before any sounds from the approaching enemy are audible.
In another version of this test the long haired man senses an approach and somehow intuits that the enemy will perform a physical attack. He follows his 'sixth sense' and stays still, pretending to be sleeping, but quickly grabs the attacker and 'kills' him as the attacker reaches down to strangle him.
This same man, after having passed these and other tests, then received a military haircut and consistently failed these tests, and many other tests that he had previously passed.
So the document recommended that all Indian trackers be exempt from military haircuts. In fact, it required that trackers keep their hair long."
The mammalian body has evolved over millions of years. Survival skills of human and animal at times seem almost supernatural. Science is constantly coming up with more discoveries about the amazing abilities of man and animal to survive. Each part of the body has highly sensitive work to perform for the survival and well being of the body as a whole.The body has a reason for every part of itself.
Hair is an extension of the nervous system, it can be correctly seen as exteriorized nerves, a type of highly evolved \'feelers\' or \'antennae\' that transmit vast amounts of important information to the brainstem, the limbic system, and the neocortex.
Not only does hair in people, including facial hair in men, provide an information highway reaching the brain, hair also emits energy, the electromagnetic energy emitted by the brain into the outer environment. This has been seen in Kirlian photography when a person is photographed with long hair and then rephotographed after the hair is cut.
When hair is cut, receiving and sending transmissions to and from the environment are greatly hampered. This results in numbing-out .
Cutting of hair is a contributing factor to unawareness of environmental distress in local ecosystems. It is also a contributing factor to insensitivity in relationships of all kinds. It contributes to sexual frustration.
In searching for solutions for the distress in our world, it may be time for us to consider that many of our most basic assumptions about reality are in error. It may be that a major part of the solution is looking at us in the face each morning when we see ourselves in the mirror.
